Having A Ball Review

Well our last episode might have been a mixed bag, but not only is this one an improvement, not only is it a sequel to one of the best executed episodes of the show, not only was Dennis O'Flaherty the writer, but Eggplant Wizard and King Hippo are the main focus. Let's have a ball with Having A Ball.

We start on Hyrule, where we are at piece once again, Ganon is gone for good now, Zelda has returned to the throne (I guess all the Warp Zone to Oblivion was breaking loose while she was looking for the Potion of Power) and the Triforce is reunited. (It also doesn't talk anymore) The instrumental for At The Circus Tonight plays in the Warp Zone to Oblivion, where we find Eggplant and Hippo coming after the Triforce, and getting into cartoony sh…

The Feud of Faxanadu Review

Here we have a rather infamous episode of Captain N, we'll get into why through the actual review, our writer was Michael Maurer.

We start with the N Team playing football, when an accident between Kid and Kevin opens up a Warp Zone that sends the N Team to Faxanadu. Here we start to get into why this episode is so hated, the titular feud. Kevin still wants to compete with Simon to get back to the palace, and Lana (the best character in this episode) just wants everyone to work together and get back. The team still splits up though (Mega Man and Kid follow Simon, everyone else goes with Kevin), and they meet the elves (led by King Melvis, a parody of Elvis) and dwarves (led by Queen Dwarfine), who are also against each other.

King Melvis exp…

Once Upon A Time Machine Review

Feels good to be back. We've got another episode with Link and Zelda as guest stars, but I can't really call it a Zelda episode, and you'll see why pretty soon. Our writers today are Michael Maurer (good to have you writing again) and Matt Uitz.

We start on Hyrule, where Link and Zelda are having Kevin, Lana, and (sighs) Duke over for lunch, and they're soon attacked by bugs. They fight them off, and at one point, Kevin attempts to do so without his N Gear (of his own volition this time, he wasn't tricked into discarding them, they're not out of power, he just got too cocky). A pair of villains voiced by Garry Chalk and Mike Donovan (sadly they're not Hippo and Eggy, but they'll have their time to shine soon), steal Kevin's belt, and by ext…

DVD Releases

My cartoon reviews are on hiatus right now, and I'm saving the remaining comic stories for later, so I thought I'd make this informative, yet sad post.

All my cartoon reviews have mentioned the VHS releases for the episodes, and I've never mentioned the DVD releases because, they aren't really anything special, but I'll talk about them anyway.

First off is the actual DVD set. The 2007 DVD set by Shout! Factory is a great way to watch the series. Not only does it contain all 26 episodes (Kevin in Videoland-Germ Wars), but a substantial amount of bonus features. We've got character bios of the N Team and Forces of Chaos, backgrounds of select Video Worlds, the Nintendo Power story that may or may not have been the story that started it all, an…

Comic Review: Videoland's Machinery

The stories I'm covering today all sort of revolve around technology in Videoland.

Starting with The Master Machine (another story that was never published in a proper issue of Captain N), Lana is showing Kevin the Master Computer System, a machine that protects the Palace of Power from Mother Brain's attacks. Kevin disapproves of this, claiming he doesn't like to put his life in the hands of a machine. This surprises Lana, as the MCS is essentially a game computer (hey writers, you can say Nintendo in the comics, we're not on TV anymore), and thought Kevin would be crazy about the idea, but Kevin says that he only likes game computers he can control, and the MCS is not needed with him in charge, Lana dismisses this as jealousy. A lightning…

Comic Review: Kid Icarus and Exposition

I didn't know where else to put these, so I grouped them into one review.

The Fruit and Vegetable War starts with Kevin and Kid Icarus flying to Cornucopia, an island on Mount Icarus. They came there to provide food for the army the N Team is supposedly raising to defeat the League of Darkness (an army we never see). Kid and Kevin are then attacked by Pear-odactyls, Cornucopia's air force, they end up separating, and Kevin loses his mechanical wings, he breaks his fall using the Power Pad though. Kevin meets the army of Fruitopia, led by Atilla the Honeydew (I'm not joking). They're having issues with Vegetania, as they've kidnapped all the tomatoes, believing them to be vegetables. Over on Vegetania, Kid Icarus meets the leader, a pumpkin…

Comic Review: The Weird Ones

These are a few stories I have not been looking forward to reviewing, but I might as well tackle them now so I can get to the really good stuff later.

First off is All´s Well That Ends Swell, a story that has never made sense to me (and probably never will). This story was also never in a normal issue.

The N Team (presumably before Samus joined) is in Kongoland´s Valley of 5,000 Holes, fighting off giant earthworms (ah yeah, that was my favorite level in Donkey Kong). Kevin brought the N Team here to search for a weapon that can defeat the League of Darkness and free Videoland. The weapon in question can be found at the bottom of the Well of Despair. Lana has heard of this weapon, and warns Kevin that it could be dangerous if it got out of c…

The Lost City of Kongoland Review

Sorry for not announcing this in the last review, Dennis O'Flaherty wrote this one. The Lost City of Kongoland is not just terrible, it's tearable. It's a bad episode, that I'm going to tear apart.

We start the episode with Donkey Kong having a rude awakening by a thorn. Prince Plenty is informed that the Lost City is rising, at Donkey Kong's expense. Over at the Palace, Lana is trying to settle a bunch of disagreements, one of which has her putting a cow at risk execution if her masters can't conclude their custody battle. This dispute concerns Lana, who is afraid she isn't forceful enough. Prince Plenty shows up and tells Lana about Kongoland's Lost City, a wizard named Konga once ruled the jungle by controlling plant monsters, but his re…

The Big Game Review

Time for another detractor favorite episode. Written by Dennis O'Flaherty.

Dr. Wily is in his base, Skull Castle on Megaland working on a new invention to defeat the N Team. A Power Vacuum that sucks up competition energy. Dr. Wily demonstrates this by having Eggplant Wizard battle Metal Man. The competition energy is gathered into a bottle, but Mother Brain doesn't understand what it's capable of. Wily explains that if he can get the N Team to play enough games, he can collect enough energy to send them into the Earthquake Zone.

At the Palace, the rest of the N Team is noticing that Kevin is feeling homesick for California (he lives in California, it was hinted at before, and confirmed in the comics). Mega Man helps matters by building a sk…

The Trouble With Tetris Review

Not much to say about this episode, let's just get started. This episode was written by Michael Maurer, Jeffery Scott's brother. Let's hope he's a better writer.

Eggplant Wizard and King Hippo are watching the N Team flying the Warp Wagon. The N Team is about to go back to the Palace when they get pulled toward a new Video World, and Mother Brain sends her flunkies to find the source of power that pulled the N Team in. The world turns out to be Tetris, where everyone is cube shaped, and the mayor, Squaresly loves declaring holidays. We learn that Tetris is so far off from the rest of Videoland, that they don't even know there's a war going on (making it the Videoland equivalent of Ba Sing Se). There's also a guy named Lyle living in Tetris,…

Quest For The Potion Of Power Review

This one needs more prefacing. I'm assuming it took so long to make a Legend of Zelda episode because the game had it's own show during the run of season 1, (that's also why Mario was never included beyond a throwaway line in episode 1) but it was cancelled by the time season 2 was around. This also seemed to be a pretty big deal, as the few print ads for season 2 I found make sure to mention that Link and Zelda have joined the cast. This is also seen as the best episode of the entire show, and we'll get to why. The writer was Rick Merwin.

We start on Hyrule, and the narration establishes that the events of the first game already happened, Ganon is defeated, and Zelda is in charge again (King Harkinian and Sprite are thankfully gone in the …

Queen of the Apes Review

Another good episode, I'll explain why in the actual review. The writers are Sean Roche and David Ehrman.

The N Team is on Kongoland (It's Kongoland!) and they're meeting Prince Plenty, because Kongoland has a ruler now. Mother Brain watches this, and is upset about not having a body. Dr. Wily brings a machine that swaps bodies, and demonstrates it on King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard. Mother Brain decides to steal Lana's body, and leaves to Kongoland. Her mirror is also back to normal, despite getting destroyed.

We also learn that the people of Plentiful (Prince Plenty's village/palace) live in "peace and harmony" with Donkey Kong, which is code for, giving him all their food so he doesn't kill all of them. One of the monkeys used for entertai…

Gameboy Review

OK, before I actually start the review, I need to ask, HOW IN THE WARP ZONE TO OBLIVION DID THIS PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR ENTERTAINMENT GET A SECOND SEASON? WHO WANTED MORE OF THIS?

Alright, with that out of the way, a bit more prefacing is in order. For the original run of season 2, this show was paired with The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3, there was a new animation studio, and Michael Tavera was doing the new music. We also got more than 1 writer, and Jeffery Scott is (thankfully) gone, I'll be mentioning the writer before I start every episode, let's hope they're better. For this episode, Dorothy Middleton was the writer

We start off the new season 1, the N Team is still in search of the King, and Mega Man still seems to be a robot, meani…

The Happy Zone Review

This was the first story in volume 2, not much else to say about it.

We start with a splash panel showing the N Team protecting Mount Icarus (It's called Mount Olympus this time, but the names are pretty much interchangeable after season 1, so I'll keep calling it Mount Icarus) from an army. Aside from King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard, the army mainly contains enemies from Kid Icarus and Metroid, Glass Joe also makes a background appearance. The army fails, and Uranos (the comic equivalent of Dr. Wily) comes up with a plan to get Captain N out of the way. He takes on the form of King Charles (Yeah he has a first name) to capture Lana, and it succeeds. Kevin returns to the Palace of Power to learn that Lana has been sent to the Happy Zone, a w…

Money Changes Everything Review

OK, comic time. I think I was a bit too harsh in my original overview, and after reading the stories some more, it struck me how huge of an improvement this is. (My nitpicks are still kind of in place though).

Before going into Money Changes Everything, I should probably cover Welcome to Videoland. These two pages were often placed before a ten page story in Nintendo Comics System issues that lacked Captain N branding, but contained Captain N stories. The story has a few tweaks, first off, the villains in each game simply decided to team up against the heroes, disrupting the balance. Kevin and Duke were then brought in to help, and Kevin formed the N Team.

Money Changes Everything starts with the N Team (minus Duke) on Zebes trying to stop a…

Happy Birthday Mega Man Review

As much as I'd like to ignore this episode entirely, and go on to the comics or season 2, I'm doing it anyway. After a nice string of episodes with character growth, status quo changes, and high stakes, we end season 1 on some goofy filler quest, which tries to handle all those details the previous episodes had, and failed miserably.

We start outside the Palace of Power, on Mega Man's birthday. He's guarding the palace in heavy snow, and laments that he wouldn't be treated with such inhumane assignments if he was alive like the rest of the N Team. (A slower cover of Danger Zone plays here) He notices a shadowy figure sneaking in, and chases him, only to find that it was just Simon leading him to a surprise party. Mega Man presumably wishes …

In Search of The King Review

I never thought I'd say this, but we have an episode that moves the plot along, let's get into it.

We start with Lana speaking to the picture of the king she had in the first epsiode, and she says that "all is safe in Videoland", giving me the headcanon that this episode takes place directly after the last one. Lana hears her father's voice, and he shows up in a mirror. The king is voiced by Long John Baldry by the way, and I'm mentioning it to give context on any Robotnik jokes I might make throughout the recap. He tells Lana that he's been banished to the Mirror Warp on Excalibur, and Lana goes to get the rest of the team. Kid and Mega Man stay behind, again, and are left on guard duty, I'll stick to calling the larger group the N Team th…

Metroid Sweet Metroid Review

I like this episode yadda yadda yadda, it tricks me into thinking the first Metroid is good yadda yadda yadda, stuff about how I'm not getting into the actual episode yadda yadda yadda, preface is over.

We start with the N Team painting a wall, Kevin uses his Power Pad to speed things up, Simon gets a bucket of paint dropped on his head, and Mega Man finds some important footage on the palace's satellite monitor. It shows a warp zone to a planet filled with Power Flowers, and Eggplant Wizard and King Hippo are collecting them as fuel for Metroid. The N Team decides that this is their chance to cut off Mother Brain's power source and free Videoland, they fly to this generic planet in their Warp Wagon, a spaceship introduced in this episode. …

The Most Dangerous Game Master Review

I've procrastinated long enough, time to tackle one of the best episodes.

Dr. Wily is shown creating something to challenge Captain N, but needs to get his memories before he can finish. Mother Brain decides to send Hippo and Eggplant for this. Over at the Palace, the N Team is watching TV. We get a rather long sequence of an Indiana Jones parody, Donkey Kong Jones and the Last Banana, it's funny, but pointless in the end. Next is a Batman parody called Wombatman, it's much shorter, and made even funnier in retrospect, since they ended up making a later episode about this. The TV eventually breaks, but two odd looking TV repairmen show up. One calls himself a TV repair eggplant, which is kind of weird. These guys are also a shameless exampl…

Wishful Thinking Review

Well, The last two episodes were absolute trash, but things are about to get better.

There's an opening shot of the palace, with Shakedown playing again, but it sounds different, it's slower, and seems to have new instrumentation to fit the scene. Initially, it sounds like there's an invasion, but it turns out the N Team is just playing basketball. While the scoreboard indicates that the two teams are led by Simon and Kevin, and it's the adapted characters vs the original characters, it really looks like it's everyone against Kid Icarus. Kevin's team ends up winning, and Kid starts to feel insecure about his size. The rest of the N Team wonders what to do about it, and Duke wanders off into an unknown room of the palace. He finds a magic la…

Simon the Ape-Man Review

I am not going to enjoy this. Simon the Ape-Man, if you haven't already read my episode ranking, is at the bottom of my list, beat out only by When Mother Brain Rules, which I don't even consider a real episode. So I'll be reviewing what I consider the worst episode, of one of the worst TV shows I have ever seen. Let's do this

So we start on Castlevania, with no title card, it needed to be added in syndication, the Count is getting ready to conquer Castlevania and summons an army of Zombies. We cut to the Palace of Power, where Kevin is showing the N Team how to ride a skateboard. Simon once again tries to upstage him, and builds a makeshift skaetboard out of an ironing board and a few wheels. After going through a tunnel, Simon crashes and…

The Mystery of When Mother Brain Rules

I was planning on making this post after I had reviewed season 2, but I couldn't resist, I want to make something other than a review right now, and When Mother Brain Rules is really intriguing to me. I'll be going over everything I know about it, the changes that were made, and possible solutions to the question surrounding it. I'll actually be expanding on this between reviews, because there's a lot to talk about, and there's no way I can do it all in one go.

(Version 1)

-What is it anyway? When Mother Brain Rules is a clip show that aired during on Captain N and The Adventures Of Super Mario Bros 3. It's typically listed as the fourteenth episode of season 2.

-What content does it contain? Clips from both seasons, more footage from season …

Three Men and a Dragon Review

Oh boy, this one's a doozy. We've got a Dragon Warrior adaptation on our hands today, and it's a weird one. I can't really say much for the accuracy, not having played Dragon Warrior, but this is an infamous episode nonetheless.

For once, the opening scene isn't on Metroid, but rather Dragon's Den, and it's facing quite a few problems. Most of the Dragons have had their hearts darkened by Dragon Lord. (who apparently wasn't actually a Dragon in the original game, but is still seen as a rather threatening villain here) Only two good Dragons remain, an obnoxious baby named Puff and her mother. (I believe both were created for this episode) Dragon Lord uses his crystal to darken the mother's heart, leaving Puff defenseless. Mother Brain contac…

Nightmare on Mother Brain's Street Review

Hmm, let's see, what would make for a good talking point in the intro paragraph. I've got it! How bout the idiotic title of the episode? There is no Mother Brain's Street in this episode, unless it's referring to Metroid itself, Mother Brain's Street doesn't exist at all. This episode had a VHS release in (probably) the U.K, paired with How's Bayou, honestly my main takeaway from the VHS was the inclusion of the teaser for the episode. OK, time to get into the actual episode.

So it looks like Mother Brain finally realized what her mirror is referencing, and asks it who the most beautiful woman in Videoland is. It obviously says it's Lana, and Mama Brain shatter the mirror (good luck spying on the N Team now, for the biggest brain in Videola…

Mega Trouble for Megaland Review

When we last saw the N Team, Mother Brain had used the Three Sacred Treasures to send them into the Warp Zone to Oblivion. This story will pick up in this episode, Mega Trouble for Megaland is typically viewed as one of the stronger episodes of Captain N, let's see how it holds up.

We're introduced with a recap of Videolympics, which is understandable, from what I can tell, this episode was made more accessible than Videolympics, an example would be a VHS release in the UK(?), where it was oddly paired with Kevin in Videoland. After the recap, it's shown that Mother Brain has returned to Metroid, (I'd question why she didn't storm the palace right away, but in the last episode, she said that if the N Team won the games, she'd never leave Me…

Videolympics Review

I'm going to have a lot of fun with this one. This might be my most watched episode of season 1, and I'm ready to get right into it.

We start once again, on Metroid, where Mother Brain is angrier than ever, and hungry for power. She asks her Metroid Mirror (the same thing she used for spying in the previous episode) how she can get rid of the N Team and take over Videoland. She is told that the Three Sacred Treasures on Mount Icarus can be used to achieve the power she's searching for. She instructs Dr. Wily to call the N Team. At the Palace of Power, we see Kevin playing a life sized Donkey Kong simulator, if the blatant advertising wasn't obvious enough already, this is sure to tip you off. Mother Brain calls the N Team, suggesting a Vide…

How's Bayou Review

Well this episode is going to be a fun one. While this review is focusing on the version used in reruns, the original airing of this episode was noticeably incomplete, and for some reason, it was what Shout Factory used on the DVD set, and because of that, it's the most accessible version of the episode. This would be a problem, but a few weeks ago, version 2 of the episode was uploaded to Youtube using a VHS copy. The voices are strangely quieter here, I don't know if this was part if the actual rerun or something on the VHS itself, but the episode it was paired with (Nightmare on Mother Brain's Street) sounds fine. The two versions of the episode aren't too different, version one has sloppier animation, but you'll get about the same expe…

Mr. and Mrs. Mother Brain review

I'm just going to get right into things, I'l only be able to get a few things down but I had to make this sooner or later.

We start at the Palace of Power, where Mother Brain is coming to what the N Team thinks is a meeting to sign a peace treaty, Simon sucks up to Lana as expected while getting ready, and drops an inkwell on his head while juggling them. We see Mother Brain and her henchmen taking her to the palace (Dr. Wily is working for her now by the way) we learn that this is all a huge lie (the first of many) and this is another plot to take over Videoland. We then see Kid Icarus taking target practice in case this is a trick (nice to see someone with common sense around here). He accidentally hits Simon, who then tries to show him h…

Kevin in Videoland review

Seeing as my previous posts were basically made as reviews, I've decided to just start reviewing individual episodes. I'll be emulating the reviews on the Unofficial Captain N Home Page, but on a smaller scale, I'll recap the episode, then write about my thoughts.

The episode starts with a horde of Metroid enemies and generic soldiers wielding giant pizza cutters approaching the Palace of Power. We see King Hippo from Punch Out and The Eggplant Wizard from Kid Icarus watching this unfold. They're pretty strange choices for villains, I know Eggplant Wizards are challenging in Kid Icarus, but King Hippo is a weird choice. King Hippo then comments about how they're too strong for "them" I assume he's talking about the palace guards here (all z…

Comic series overview

I'm probably not going to make any friends with this post, but I want to talk about the comics anyway.

First off, I can say that this is in fact an improvement over the cartoon, but I feel like it's wasting a lot of potential. I understand that this was a part of Nintendo Comics system, and a ton of first party franchises weren't included due to having their own stories, but I'm really peeved about the comic not really using games other than Kid Icarus and Metroid. The stuff they do with these games is great, but seeing the same enemies from the worlds can get annoying. I understand why we didn't see a lot of Punch Out content here, since it had it's own stories, but there wasn't much of an excuse to use so little of Kongoland. However, tha…

My episode ranking (season 3 not included)

I thought I'd rank the episodes in seasons 1 and 2, and give my thoughts on them

Worst. When Mother Brain Rules, not much else to say, just a clip show that shouldn't even qualify as an episode, the Video Game Masters version is a little better, but not by much, I'm not even giving it a number

26. Simon The Ape Man, unfocused, not funny, and packed with filler. The brainwashing plot is pointless, and that time could have easily been devoted to elaborating on Simon thinking he's Donkey Kong Jr. (Which comes in 3/4 in by the way)

25. The Trojan Dragon, just a boring and bad episode, no one would give a crap about it if it didn't have Link and Zelda in it

24. The Lost City of Kongoland, really uncomfortable to watch, this is probably the episode …
